We face a crisis – the crisis of rent

In Jersey City, this includes enormous rent hikes, evictions, a lack of safe and affordable housing, mistreatment by landlords, and rapid gentrification and displacement. Increasingly, this leaves people – including some who have lived in Jersey City their whole life – so priced out that they become unhoused.

Who is the Jersey City Tenants Union?

JCTU is an autonomous, tenant-led organization mobilizing for the human right to housing through education, support, advocacy, and collective action. We fight against issues such as poor living conditions, evictions, unaffordability, massive rent hikes, gentrification, and harassment by landlords and the state.

What is a tenant union going to do about my living conditions?

We believe that the only way to build a just society is to put political power in the hands of the people. We are not a legal or policy advocacy organization nor are we a charity. We are a member-driven organization that educates and empowers tenants to fight for our rights ourselves. As such, we do not distinguish between the tenant union and the tenants; we are all the tenant union.

Why can’t I just sue my landlord?

Legal pathways can be helpful in certain situations, but tenants often learn the hard way that the law is not on our side. Overwhelmingly, even laws that are less hostile to tenants do not successfully deter landlords from mistreating us because, in practice, litigation or government enforcement are such weak threats.
